Drivers crossing the Clinton River in Rochester Hills will face weekend bridge closures in September after the Road Commission for Oakland County announced a $1.07 million maintenance project hitting four local spans.

The work begins Monday, Aug. 17, as part of a seven-bridge countywide effort, according to an RCOC civic alert published Thursday, Aug. 13. Four of those bridges sit in Rochester Hills and Rochester:

  • Livernois Road over the Clinton River (just south of Avon Road, Rochester Hills) — approximately 30,810 vehicles daily
  • Tienken Road over Paint Creek (just east of Livernois Road, Rochester Hills) — approximately 24,000 vehicles daily
  • Avon Road over the Clinton River (just east of Livernois Road, Rochester Hills) — approximately 17,670 vehicles daily
  • Parkdale Road over Stony Creek (just west of Dequindre Road, Rochester) — approximately 14,230 vehicles daily

The Livernois Road bridge is the highest-traffic span among the four local bridges in the project. RCOC said it plans to fully close both the Livernois Road and Avon Road bridges for one weekend each, likely in September depending on weather. Specific closure dates and detour routes have not been announced.

The Parkdale Road and Tienken Road bridges will stay open throughout the project with lane closures during active work.

What crews will do

The maintenance includes concrete deck and joint repairs, sidewalk repairs, bridge approach pavement repairs, epoxy overlay and new pavement markings. RCOC said the work will extend bridge life and address repairs before more extensive rehabilitation is needed.

Who's doing the work

C.A. Hull Company Inc. of Commerce Township, which calls itself the largest Michigan-based bridge builder, won the contract. RCOC is funding the project directly, not through a millage or state or federal grant.
