The Veterans Tribute of Oakland Township will host a community gathering Friday, Sept. 11, to mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The informal event begins at 7 p.m. at the VTOT memorial site, 5236 Adams Road in Oakland Township. Organizers are asking attendees to bring lawn chairs and beverages for an evening honoring nearly 3,000 first responders and service members. The Veterans Tribute of Oakland Township is a Michigan-chartered nonprofit that built and operates the Adams Road memorial.
The Oakland Township gathering is one of several remembrance ceremonies across Oakland County on Sept. 11, according to The Oakland Press. In neighboring Orion Township, the Orion Veterans Memorial will host a Patriot Day ceremony beginning with a video screening at 4 p.m. and an official ceremony at 6 p.m. featuring the posting of colors, a prayer and the national anthem.
CBS News Detroit reported that 42 people with Michigan connections were among the victims of the 2001 attacks, according to the Michigan Remembers 9-11 Fund. They included Detroit natives Margaret Elaine Mattic, Marsha D. Ratchford and Sandra Lee Wright, along with University of Michigan and Michigan State University graduates.
The gathering starts at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 11, at the VTOT memorial site, 5236 Adams Road, Oakland Township, and will honor the nearly 3,000 people killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Attendees are asked to bring their own lawn chairs and beverages.
