Oakland Township property owners would keep paying the same tax rates for parks and safety paths under two millage renewals on the Nov. 3 ballot.

Both proposals are renewals of existing levies, not new taxes. Neither would raise the current rate. If approved, collections under the renewed millages would begin with the December 2027 levy.

The first proposal renews the Parks and Recreation Millage at its current Headlee-reduced rate of up to 0.6809 mills, or about 68 cents per $1,000 of taxable value. The Oakland County Elections Division's official proposal list estimates the levy would raise roughly $1.46 million in its first year. Revenue would fund management, maintenance, acquisition and improvement of township parks, recreation areas, trails, facilities and programs.

The second proposal renews the Safety Path Millage at up to 0.1580 mills, about 16 cents per $1,000 of taxable value. Oakland Township voters originally approved the safety path levy in 2016 at 0.17 mills; the renewal reflects a Headlee rollback to the lower rate. First-year revenue is estimated at $351,302. That money pays for construction and maintenance of safety paths, trails and boardwalks connecting schools, parks and neighborhoods.

The safety path renewal appeared on the Oakland Township Board of Trustees' July 14 agenda as Resolution No. 26-14 for consideration, according to board records.

Both renewals would run 10 years, through the December 2036 levy.
