Meadow Brook Hall needs volunteers to help deck the historic mansion for the holidays. The deadline to apply is Thursday, Oct. 22.
The Rochester landmark on the Oakland University campus is recruiting for its annual Holidays at Meadow Brook season, which runs Friday, Nov. 27, through Wednesday, Dec. 30. More than 300 volunteers support the hall throughout the year, and the hall says volunteers are especially important during the holiday season.
Roles range from greeting visitors as a Holiday Walk host to ringing up purchases as a Holiday Market cashier. Behind-the-scenes jobs include untangling Christmas lights and organizing boxes of holiday decor, according to the hall's volunteer page.
Holiday Walk is a self-guided indoor tour of the 110-room Tudor Revival mansion. The route features more than 50 trees, hundreds of feet of garland and thousands of twinkling lights, including a 10-foot-tall poinsettia tree made from 150 live plants. Winter Wonder Lights transforms the grounds after dark with a light show, music and concessions.
Shannon O'Berski, senior director of external relations, called the Holidays at Meadow Brook "the most magical time of year at the Great Estate" in a Sept. 28 announcement. The hall is fully self-supporting, relying on special events like the holiday season to fund preservation of the 88,000-square-foot National Historic Landmark.
Matilda Dodge Wilson and her second husband, Alfred Wilson, built Meadow Brook Hall between 1926 and 1929. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2012.
Volunteers who apply by the Oct. 22 deadline will receive onboarding and training. Applications are available online at meadowbrookhall.org/support/volunteer. Prospective volunteers can also email [email protected] for more information. Perks include discounts on community events and at the Museum Shop.
Coming up: Tickets for Holiday Walk, Winter Wonder Lights and other holiday events go on sale Monday, Oct. 12, at meadowbrookholidays.com.
