Stoney Creek clinched the OAA White Division football title with a 41-14 win over Rochester on Friday, Oct. 2, at Stoney Creek in Rochester Hills.

The Cougars improved to 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the OAA White, according to MaxPreps. It is the program's first division title under head coach Rick Powell.

Rochester fell to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in league play. The Falcons now face a three-game stretch that will determine whether they reach the MHSAA Division 1 playoffs.

How Stoney Creek won it

The Cougars were dominant on the ground. Stoney Creek rushed for 338 yards and averaged nearly eight yards per carry, The Oakland Press reported. Junior quarterback Brandon Gergics scored four rushing touchdowns and carried for 116 yards. Senior Brosie Telegadas added 157 rushing yards. Stoney Creek led 28-7 at halftime and never let Rochester back in the game.

Gergics said after the game that the Cougars' ability to grind out yards on the ground showed what kind of team they are. Senior lineman Ian Genzlinger credited the offensive line for setting the tone.

Rochester head coach Erik Vernon said Stoney Creek was physical and well-coached, and that his team needed to match that physicality but could not. He pointed to receiver Nate Tandy as a bright spot, noting key catches on third-down plays. Quarterback Matt Dyki and running back Blake Czechowski scored Rochester's two touchdowns.

Rochester's playoff math

Before the loss, Rochester was tied with Plymouth at No. 24 in the Division 1 playoff-point standings with 49.200 points, according to Hillsdale Daily News standings published Oct. 1. The top 32 teams qualify. Updated standings reflecting the Week 6 results had not yet been published.

Rochester hosts Troy Athens on Friday, Oct. 9, for Senior Week in a game that carries OAA White implications. Athens entered the week at 2-4 overall and 2-1 in league play. The Falcons also have an OAA crossover game against an opponent not yet listed on the schedule, then close the regular season at Monroe on Friday, Oct. 23. Playoff selection is Sunday, Oct. 25.

Winning all three remaining games would give Rochester a 6-3 record entering selection weekend. A 5-4 or 4-5 finish would leave its playoff fate dependent on its final playoff-point total and results elsewhere.

What's next

Stoney Creek travels to Rochester Adams on Friday, Oct. 9, in the second of back-to-back games against city rivals.

Rochester's Senior Week matchup against Athens is the most consequential game left on the Falcons' schedule.
