Oakland University's baseball program has won the American Baseball Coaches Association Team Academic Excellence Award for the fifth consecutive year, the ABCA announced Wednesday, July 22.

The Golden Grizzlies have now claimed the honor five straight times, a streak dating to the award's creation in 2016. Fourteen student-athletes posted GPAs of 3.5 or higher during the spring semester of the 2025-26 academic year. Two earned 4.0 GPAs.

The ABCA award recognizes member programs at all levels of high school and college baseball that maintain a cumulative team GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale. Nearly 500 collegiate programs earned the distinction this cycle, according to the ABCA announcement, including more than 100 Division I teams and two other Horizon League programs.

Head coach Brian Nelson leads the Rochester Hills program in his second year at the helm. Nelson was named Oakland's full-time head coach on May 20, 2025, after serving as interim beginning in July 2024. The coaching staff also includes assistant coach and recruiting coordinator Jared Helmic, pitching coach Kevin Hahn, assistant coach Mark Whitehead, director of player development and analytics Hunter Pidek, and director of program development Chris Newell.

The Golden Grizzlies compete in the Horizon League at the NCAA Division I level and play home games at Oakland University Baseball Field in Rochester Hills. The program has fielded teams since 1970.

Oakland's 2026-27 schedule has not yet been released.
