Oakland University freshman Haley Johnson won two individual events in her first collegiate meet and earned Horizon League Women's Swimmer of the Week for it.

The Horizon League announced the award Wednesday, Oct. 7, after Johnson helped the Golden Grizzlies rout Youngstown State 249-102 in their season opener Friday, Oct. 2, through Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Oakland Aquatic Center in Rochester Hills.

Johnson, a Pewaukee, Wisconsin, native, won the 400-yard individual medley in 4:31.69 in her first collegiate race. Her other individual victory came in the 200 butterfly, where she swam 2:05.44. A 2:10.37 swim earned her second place in the 200 individual medley.

She wasn't done.

Johnson swam the final leg of Oakland’s all-freshman B team in the 400 freestyle relay. Her leg took 54.87 seconds, and the team’s combined time of 3:35.81 earned second place. Oakland's athletics department noted Johnson helped lead the Golden Grizzlies to the lopsided victory over the Penguins, marking Oakland's first win of the 2026-27 season.

Johnson is the first Oakland women's swimmer to claim the Horizon League weekly award in the 2026-27 season. IU Indianapolis' Victoria Surdyka won the honor Sept. 16.

Oakland's women's swimming and diving team has won 13 consecutive Horizon League championships, a streak dating to the program's first season in the conference in 2013-14. The women's program has now claimed 32 straight conference titles overall. League head coaches picked the Golden Grizzlies No. 1 in the 2026-27 preseason poll with 49 points, ahead of Milwaukee at 37, IU Indianapolis at 35, Cleveland State at 32, Youngstown State at 20, Green Bay at 15 and Northern Kentucky at 8.

Last season, freshman Lydia Soldatke earned both Horizon League Freshman of the Year and Athlete of the Year honors. She returns as a sophomore alongside seniors Clarissa Bezuidenhout, Delaney Buckner, Ava McNamara, Ariana Rice and Casey Sanders, according to Oakland’s current roster.

Johnson joins that returning core as the latest freshman to make an immediate mark in the program.

The Golden Grizzlies travel to West Lafayette, Indiana, to face Purdue on Oct. 30-31, according to Oakland’s schedule.
