Oakland University redshirt freshman Cal Kurzawa is the Horizon League's Offensive Player of the Week after powering the Golden Grizzlies to their first win of 2026.

The league announced the award Monday, Aug. 31, recognizing the midfielder from Carmel, Ind., for his five-point performance in Oakland's 3-2 victory over the University of Illinois Chicago. The Aug. 27 match at the Oakland Soccer Field in Rochester Hills was the Golden Grizzlies' home opener.

It is the first Offensive Player of the Week award for Oakland this season.

Kurzawa, who wears No. 12, scored both of his goals in the second half. He put Oakland ahead at the 56:32 mark off an assist from Stephen Gilbert, then added the game-winner at 71:49, again from Gilbert. He also assisted Christopher Jean-Leger's opening goal at 12:20, as we reported Aug. 28.

Kurzawa joins teammate Jean-Leger, who earned the same award in 2025, as the only freshmen to win it for Oakland since 2018, according to Oakland Athletics. Through three games, Kurzawa leads the Horizon League in goals (three), shots on goal (six) and points (seven). He is making an immediate statistical impact in his inaugural season with the program.

Head coach Paul Doroh's squad sits at 1-1-1 after a rocky start on the road. Oakland opened with a 2-2 draw at Marquette on Aug. 20, then fell 5-0 at Wisconsin on Aug. 23 before returning home to beat UIC. The win over the Flames gave the Golden Grizzlies momentum heading into a stretch of nonconference play.

Oakland travels to Arizona to face Grand Canyon University on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 9 p.m. ET.
