Oakland University men's soccer plays its first home match of 2026 on Thursday, Aug. 27, when the Golden Grizzlies host the University of Illinois Chicago at Oakland Soccer Field in Rochester. Kickoff is 6 p.m.

The Grizzlies (0-1-1) need a bounce-back. They opened the season with a 2-2 draw at Marquette on Aug. 20, then absorbed a 5-0 loss at No. 1 Wisconsin on Aug. 23. Against Marquette, Oakland applied consistent second-half pressure and capitalized on its offensive chances, according to Oakland Athletics. The Wisconsin trip offered no such comfort.

Home turf matters in this series. Oakland has beaten UIC just twice in 12 all-time meetings, and both wins came in Rochester, the most recent in 2021. The Flames won 1-0 in Rochester in 2024, the last time the teams met.

UIC (0-1-1) arrives on the third of four straight road games to open its season. The Flames lost 1-0 to Tulsa on Aug. 20 and drew 1-1 with Oral Roberts on Aug. 23. A former Horizon League rival, UIC now competes in the Missouri Valley Conference.

The Flames posted a 10-3-5 record in 2025 and reached the MVC Tournament semifinals before falling 4-1 to Evansville. They lost 2025 MVC Player of the Year and Forward of the Year Edouard Nys but return midfielder Darrell Turcios, who scored five goals and added four assists last season. Turcios is UIC's primary returning offensive threat.

Thursday's match closes a soccer doubleheader at Oakland Soccer Field. After the home opener, the Grizzlies hit the road to face Grand Canyon University on Thursday, Sept. 3, at 9 p.m. ET before returning home to host Cleveland State on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m.
