Oakland University women's soccer dropped its home opener Thursday, Aug. 20, falling 1-0 to Bowling Green State at the Oakland Soccer Field in Rochester.

The Golden Grizzlies managed just two shots all night, only one of them on target, while Bowling Green peppered goalkeeper Norah Schmidt with 15 attempts. Schmidt kept Oakland in the game with four saves, but the offense couldn't generate enough pressure to find an equalizer.

BGSU's Taylor Green broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute, giving the Falcons a 1-0 halftime lead that held through the final whistle. The goal came after Schmidt had already denied Bowling Green's Ella Kane in the 12th minute to keep the match scoreless early.

Oakland's best chances came from Mallory Anderson and Isabella Bierod. Anderson, who scored the extra-time goal that clinched Oakland's first Horizon League Tournament win since 2021 last fall, had a shot in the 27th minute but couldn't convert. Bierod tested BGSU goalkeeper O'Malley with a late attempt in the 83rd minute that was caught cleanly.

Schmidt was busy again late. She denied shots from Lizzie Bultynck and Audrey Oliver in the closing minutes to prevent Bowling Green from extending its lead.

The loss drops Oakland to 1-2 on the season after opening with a win at Mercyhurst and a loss at Akron. Bowling Green, which entered the match at 1-0 according to BG Falcon Media, improved to 2-0.

The Golden Grizzlies return to the Oakland Soccer Field on Thursday, Aug. 27, to host Toledo at 2:30 p.m.
