Two Rochester Hills bridges that carry a combined 48,480 vehicles a day are headed for back-to-back weekend closures in September, pending a board vote.
The Avon Road bridge over the Clinton River would shut down from approximately Friday, Sept. 18, through Monday, Sept. 21, according to the Road Commission for Oakland County's Sept. 3 meeting agenda. The Livernois Road bridge over the Clinton River would follow, closing from approximately Friday, Sept. 25, through Monday, Sept. 28.
Both closures are part of RCOC Project No. 55223, one piece of a $1.07 million preventive maintenance effort covering seven Oakland County bridges.The Road Commission board is scheduled to vote on the closure resolutions at its Thursday, Sept. 3, meeting at 1:30 p.m. The word "approximately" appears on all four dates in the agenda.
The dates narrow what had been a vague timeline. In an Aug. 13 announcement, the Road Commission said it expected to close the two bridges sometime in September, depending on weather, with specific dates and detours to come later.
The agenda now pins down four-day windows for each bridge.
Traffic impact
The Livernois Road bridge, just south of Avon Road, carries approximately 30,810 vehicles daily. The Avon Road bridge, just east of Livernois Road, carries approximately 17,670 vehicles daily. Outside the full-closure weekends, the bridges will remain open with lane closures in place.
C.A. Hull Company Inc. of Commerce Township is the contractor. Work includes concrete deck and joint repairs, sidewalk repairs, bridge approach pavement repairs, epoxy overlay and new pavement markings. The entire six-bridge 2026 phase is expected to wrap up in October.
No detours announced
No detour routes have been published. The Road Commission's Aug. 13 post said detours would be announced in advance of each closure.
