Two 13-year-old boys are in critical condition after a Rochester Hills man driving a Ford F-250 struck them in a Bloomfield Township crosswalk Monday, Sept. 7.

No update on the boys' conditions had been released as of Tuesday, Sept. 8. Both were listed in critical condition Monday after being transported to separate hospitals.

The boys were riding together on a single e-moto, traveling westbound on the safety path along Hickory Grove at the intersection with Telegraph Road around noon, according to Fox 2 Detroit. The F-250 was heading southbound on Telegraph when it hit them in the crosswalk.

The 35-year-old driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators, Bloomfield Township police said.

Lt. Nicholas Soley, a public information officer with the Bloomfield Township Police Department, told reporters that witnesses indicated the truck likely had a green light. Soley said it appeared the driver never saw the e-moto crossing the crosswalk while traveling southbound at a normal speed.

"Tragic, all around," Soley said.

He said the vehicle the teens were riding would be classified as an e-moto, a motorized electric vehicle, and that the boys should not have been operating it given its capabilities. The department has been warning about the dangers of e-bikes and e-motos after several incidents in recent months, Soley said.

The department's priority is education aimed at parents, Soley said, because they are the ones purchasing the vehicles for their children.

One boy was taken to Trinity Health Oakland Hospital. The other went to Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital. Both were transported by the Bloomfield Township Fire Department, according to WXYZ 7 News Detroit.

A Bloomfield Hills Schools spokesperson confirmed the two boys are eighth-grade students at North Hills Middle School. The crash happened the day before school started in the Bloomfield area. The district said principals and administrators were working to have supports in place for students and staff when classes began Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The Bloomfield Township Police Department's Traffic Division and the South Oakland County Crash Investigation Team are handling the investigation. Police closed southbound Telegraph Road at Hickory Grove Road for the investigation Monday, the department said on X.
