The Livernois Road bridge over the Clinton River in Rochester Hills will shut down for a long weekend starting Friday, Sept. 18 at 6 p.m.

The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) confirmed the closure on Sept. 11. The bridge, just south of Avon Road, will reopen by Monday, Sept. 21 at 6 a.m. That stretch of Livernois Road carries about 30,800 vehicles a day, according to the RCOC, making it one of the busier crossings in the area.

The RCOC said in the notice that the closure is for preventive bridge maintenance. The work is weather-dependent and could be rescheduled. The commission did not name a backup date.

Detour route

Drivers who normally cross the bridge will need to follow Avon Road to Crooks Road to Hamlin Road and back to Livernois Road. The route works in both directions.

Residents and businesses north and south of the bridge will keep access throughout the closure, the RCOC said.

What the work involves

The closure falls under the RCOC's bridge preventive maintenance program, which covers deck repairs, approach repairs and epoxy application across the county. The RCOC did not specify which of those tasks apply to the Livernois Road bridge.

Back-to-back bridge work

The Livernois closure follows a similar weekend shutdown on the nearby Avon Road bridge over the Clinton River, just east of Livernois Road. That bridge was scheduled to close Friday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m. through Monday, Sept. 14 at 6 a.m. for the same type of maintenance. The Avon Road section handles about 17,700 vehicles daily.

Together, the two closures mean consecutive weekend disruptions for Rochester Hills drivers who use either crossing.
