Sophie Ruddy shot a 45 to take first-place individual honors Wednesday, Aug. 19 as Stoney Creek's girls golf team beat Bloomfield Hills 187-220 in the Cougars' OAA League opener.

The 33-stroke victory gave Stoney Creek a commanding start to its fall conference schedule. All four scoring Cougars broke 50 over nine holes.

Anabele Jakubowski carded a 46, Megan Sypniewski followed with a 47 and Magaly Morales rounded out the lineup at 49, according to results posted on the Stoney Creek athletics site by Meghan Ivory. The tight clustering among the top four scorers stood out: just four strokes separated Ruddy's leading 45 from Morales' 49.

Bloomfield Hills could not keep pace, finishing 33 strokes behind.

The OAA League match capped a busy stretch for Stoney Creek. One day earlier, on Tuesday, Aug. 18, the Cougars competed in the Lady Falcon Invitational, an 18-hole event where they placed 13th out of 19 teams with a combined score of 395. Morales shot a 98 in that tournament and Nikhita Chanchali posted a 93.

The two events are difficult to compare directly because the invitational was played over 18 holes while the OAA match covered nine. Still, the Cougars' four-player consistency in the league match, with no scorer above 49, offers an encouraging sign heading deeper into the OAA schedule.

Ruddy's performance anchored the win. Her 45 over nine holes earned medalist honors for the match and set the tone for a Stoney Creek lineup that left little room for Bloomfield Hills to close the gap.

Stoney Creek returns to action Monday, Aug. 24 at 3 p.m. against Rochester at Great Oaks Country Club, 777 Great Oaks Blvd. in Rochester Hills.
