Rochester Community Schools students participated in shark-tagging research with the University of Miami as part of the district's AP Capstone research program.

The students worked with scientists in UM's Shark Research and Conservation Program, helping with tagging studies focused on shark ecology, movement and conservation, the district posted on X Wednesday, Oct. 7. Photos showed students on a boat hauling lines and watching a shark being tagged.

The university’s Shark Research and Conservation Program offers school field trips in which researchers and interns guide students as they deploy fishing equipment and gather data.

AP Capstone is an optional two-year program the district describes as research-intensive. Tony Lafferty, a Stoney Creek High School teacher, has said the program teaches students how to study rather than what to study, according to the district’s news page.
