Rochester Community Schools buildings can each receive a free cafeteria waste assessment worth $1,500 through a Detroit Zoological Society competition accepting applications through Friday, Oct. 30.

The program, called GreenPrize, will award 18 schools across southeast Michigan a Waste-Free Lunch Assessment package. Schools in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties get priority, as Oakland County Times first reported Saturday, Sept. 26. Schools in surrounding counties are also encouraged to apply, and all applications will be considered.

Each winning school receives a walk-through of its lunchroom waste practices, a waste audit demonstration with students, a presentation from a waste diversion expert to a student assembly and a technical report with findings and recommendations. The package also includes support in applying for Michigan Green School recognition, according to the Detroit Zoological Society's GreenPrize page.

The competition is open to public and private schools serving grades 4 through 12. Schools do not need an existing environmental program to apply. Existing Green Teams and Eco Clubs can participate alongside schools just beginning sustainability efforts.

Applicants must have administrative support and a staff member willing to organize students and work with a waste diversion expert. Schools should also be planning to apply for Michigan Green School recognition during the upcoming school year.

Every school in Rochester Community Schools has achieved some level of Michigan Green Schools certification, with most reaching the highest level, according to a Rochester Hills Public Library post from Aug. 12. Whether any district school has previously participated in GreenPrize is unclear.

The Detroit Zoological Society said the program gives students hands-on experience with recycling, waste reduction and zero-waste practices. The goal is for students to develop habits they can also use at home and in their communities. M3 Investment Services sponsors the program.

The application portal opened Sept. 8. Schools considering an application can join an optional virtual question-and-answer session Thursday, Oct. 8 at 3:30 p.m. Applications are due by 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, and winners are scheduled to be announced Monday, Nov. 2.
