Sairam Balaji, a Rochester Adams High School graduate, has been named the 15th recipient of the Patrick and Christie Scoggin Foundation Scholarship at Oakland University, according to an Oct. 20 university announcement.
The scholarship provides up to $17,000 a year, with the possibility of renewal for three additional years.
Balaji studies clinical and diagnostic sciences and belongs to OU’s honors college. He plans to become a physician, the university reported.
During high school, he worked as a busboy and dishwasher for two years and anticipated continuing to work to help pay college expenses. OU said the award will give him more time for coursework, research and volunteering.
The university also reported that Balaji joined assistant professor Michael Risner’s glaucoma research lab before his first semester began.
Established in 2012, the scholarship serves graduates of Rochester Adams, Rochester, Stoney Creek and Avondale high schools. Academic achievement and financial need are among its selection criteria, according to OU.
Balaji told the university’s news office that he hopes to support future students.
“If I do end up becoming a doctor, I would love to give back to Oakland University and help other students be able to pursue an education without any stress,” he said.
