A 42-year-old Rochester Hills man suffered serious injuries Tuesday, Sept. 15, when his electric motorcycle was struck by a pickup truck at West Avon and Old Perch roads.

The crash happened at approximately 7:25 a.m., according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, WXYZ reported. The man had been riding the e-motorcycle on the sidewalk and attempted to cross West Avon Road in the crosswalk, the sheriff's office said.

A vehicle stopped in a position that blocked the crosswalk, forcing the rider outside the marked crossing. He then traveled into the path of a 2009 Ford Ranger heading east on West Avon Road, and the two collided.

Witnesses told deputies the Ford Ranger entered the intersection against a red traffic signal. Speed did not appear to be a factor, a sheriff's office spokesman said, according to WWJ Newsradio.

The rider was not wearing a helmet. Rochester Hills firefighters transported him to Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition Tuesday afternoon. The Ford Ranger's driver, a 20-year-old Lake Orion man, and his passenger, a 20-year-old Rochester Hills woman, were not injured.

Deputies said the e-motorcycle was not registered and was not legally permitted on either the sidewalk or the roadway. E-motorcycles differ from e-bikes: operators must carry a driver's license with a motorcycle endorsement, registration and insurance. E-motos also reach speeds well above the 28 mph limit on e-bikes.

Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard called on the Michigan Legislature to tighten regulations. "The legislature must pass better guard rails on where, how, and who can operate these vehicles, as well as require disclosure to potential buyers about where, how, and who may operate them," Bouchard said in a statement.

Bouchard also said people sell kits that make an e-moto look like an e-bike to disguise illegal use.

The West Avon Road crash was the third serious e-motorcycle collision in Rochester Hills and Oakland County in roughly six weeks. On Aug. 6, a 12-year-old Rochester Hills child was seriously injured after striking a parked truck while riding an unregistered e-motorcycle near Dorfield Drive and Briston Drive, according to Oakland County 115. The e-motorcycle was capable of speeds exceeding 45 mph. The child was wearing a bicycle helmet, which officials said is not rated for motorcycle use.

On Sept. 7, two 13-year-old boys were critically injured in Bloomfield Township when a Ford F-250 struck them as they crossed Telegraph Road on an e-moto. After that crash, Bouchard told FOX 2 Detroit on Sept. 8 that many parents buy e-motos thinking they are fun and easy to ride without understanding the speed, torque or legal requirements.

Bloomfield Township's board enacted a six-month moratorium Sept. 14 banning e-bikes and e-scooters on sidewalks and township property for anyone under 16. Rochester Community Schools requires students to walk e-bikes on school property.

The OCSO Crash Reconstruction Unit's investigation into the West Avon Road crash remains ongoing.
