Five candidates are competing for two full-term seats on the Rochester Community Schools Board of Education in the Tuesday, Nov. 3 election.

Michael Frink, Lawrence Halushka, Lisa Halushka, incumbent Sherry Wynn Perdue and Jamie Rawcliffe will appear on the ballot for six-year terms, according to the Oakland County Times. Voters will pick two of the five.

A separate partial-term seat, ending Dec. 31, 2028, is also on the ballot. Incumbent Laurin Gracey-Parker and Deanna Harless are running for that position.

Perdue is the only incumbent in the full-term race, but her tenure is recent. The board appointed her on March 23 to fill the vacancy left by Board President Jessica Gupta, who resigned effective March 1. Seven candidates interviewed for the appointment after the board identified applicants at its March 9 meeting, according to a district announcement. Perdue's appointed term runs through the November election.

Perdue, a Rochester Hills resident and parent of an RCS graduate, holds a Ph.D. in educational leadership from Oakland University, a master's degree in English and American studies, and a bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary humanities from Michigan State University. She has directed Oakland University's Writing Center for 15 years and has taught courses there on educational leadership, research methodology and curriculum development. She also served as president of the International Writing Centers Association.

Perdue said in March, when the board appointed her to fill Gupta's seat, that she felt called to play a more active role in supporting Rochester students. "My background in educational leadership, policy development and emerging technologies positions me to contribute thoughtfully," she said.

Superintendent Nicholas Russo said in March that Perdue "offers a forward-thinking perspective and recognizes many of the opportunities and challenges that sit before school districts …"

No campaign websites, public statements or candidate interviews were available for the four challengers as of Sept. 14. The Oakland County Times has begun publishing candidate interview videos ahead of the election and plans to add more. The outlet charges a small processing fee for the series and does not endorse candidates.

Rochester Community Schools serves roughly 15,000 students across Rochester, most of Rochester Hills and Oakland Township, and portions of Auburn Hills, Orion Township, Shelby Township and Washington Township.
