Rochester and Rochester Hills voters who need a ride to the polls on Tuesday, Aug. 4, can board any SMART bus without paying a fare.

The regional transit authority announced it will offer free rides across its entire network for the primary election, covering all services in Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne counties from midnight to 11:59 p.m. No fare, pass, or ticket is required.

For local voters, Route 492 (Rochester) is the primary fixed-route bus serving Rochester and Rochester Hills. Riders in Auburn Hills can use SMART Flex, the agency's on-demand service in that area. Rochester-area voters who need curb-to-curb transportation can book a Connector or ADA Paratransit trip, though both require advance reservations.

"On Election Day, that mission means making sure a lack of transportation never stands between a resident and their polling place," SMART General Manager and CEO Tiffany J. Gunter said in a statement reported by The Oakland Press. "Free rides, all day, across our entire network, for everyone."

Rochester-area voters face three ballot proposals on Aug. 4, including a countywide school millage, a Rochester Hills fire millage increase, and a pathway millage renewal. Polls are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
