Rochester Hills resident Michael Bouchard Jr. won the Republican nomination for Michigan's 10th Congressional District on Tuesday, Aug. 4, setting up a November general election battle against Democrat Christina Hines in one of the nation's most competitive U.S. House races.

The Associated Press called the GOP primary for Bouchard just before 9:20 p.m., according to the Detroit Free Press. He captured more than 72% of the vote in unofficial results reported by Patch, finishing 45,473 votes to Justin Kirk's 11,388 and Steffan Demetropoulos' 2,430.

"They didn't vote for a candidate, they voted for a mission," Bouchard said in his victory statement. "I've worn the uniform of our nation and faced America's enemies abroad. Now the job is here at home: rebuild Michigan manufacturing, keep our families safe, and put this district first."

Bouchard, an Army National Guard captain and Bronze Star veteran, had the endorsement of President Donald Trump, House Speaker Mike Johnson and several Michigan Republican members of Congress. He is the son of Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.

On the Democratic side, former prosecutor Christina Hines of Warren won her primary, with Decision Desk HQ calling the race just before midnight. Hines held about 50% of the vote over Eric Chung (32%) and Tim Greimel (18%), according to the Detroit News.

The 10th District covers southern Macomb County and parts of eastern Oakland County, including Rochester and Rochester Hills. The seat opened after Republican Rep. John James of Shelby Township chose to run for governor rather than seek a third term.

As of July 15, Bouchard's campaign had raised $1.41 million with $958,230 cash on hand, while Hines had raised $1.21 million with $158,196 available.

Cook Political Report rates the district as Republican-leaning, and the November matchup is expected to be among the most closely watched U.S. House races in the country.
